Chapter One

Breed history

In the mid-twentieth century, a remarkable genetic mutation occurred on a farm in Cornwall, England. A tortoiseshell cat named Serena gave birth to a litter containing a single, peculiar male kitten with a tightly curled, incredibly soft coat. Named Kallibunker, this unique feline became the founding sire of a brand-new breed that would eventually captivate the global feline fancy.

Chapter Two

Breed history

Recognizing the distinctiveness of Kallibunker's astrakhan-like fur, local breeders consulted with geneticists to preserve the rare trait. They discovered that this striking coat was the result of a recessive gene, completely independent from the mutation that would later create the Devon Rex. Through careful outcrossing with domestic shorthairs and other established breeds, early enthusiasts successfully expanded the gene pool while maintaining the signature marcel wave.

Chapter Three

Breed history

The resulting Cornish Rex is a marvel of feline architecture, characterized by a slender, whippet-like body and long, elegant legs. Beneath their plush, velvety curls, they possess deep chests, arched backs, and large, bat-like ears set high upon remarkably egg-shaped heads. This distinct morphology not only sets them apart visually but also contributes to their highly active, acrobatic, and affectionate disposition.

Chapter Four

Breed history

By the late nineteen-fifties, the first Cornish Rex cats were exported from the United Kingdom to North America, sparking international interest. Dedicated breeding programs across Europe and the United States refined the breed standard, ensuring its robust health and enduring popularity. Today, this extraordinary Cornish export is celebrated worldwide by enthusiasts who prize its rich history, athletic grace, and unparalleled coat.

Once upon a time in the United Kingdom, a very special kitten was born on a cozy farm. This kitten did not have fluffy fur like other cats. Instead, he wore a coat of tight, wavy curls that felt as soft as velvet. People named this magical curly cat the Cornish Rex.

A Cornish Rex is wonderfully unique to look at. They have huge ears that look like bat wings to help them listen for the tiniest squeak. Their bodies are long, skinny, and bendy, just like a little acrobat ready to jump high.

These cats have tiny paws but giant hearts. They are bursting with energy and love to run, fetch, and play tricks all day long. If you sit down, a Cornish Rex will happily zoom right into your lap for a warm cuddle.

Because their fur is so short, they are always looking for cozy spots to stay warm. You might find them hiding under your blankets or sleeping in a bright, sunny window. The Cornish Rex is a funny, fuzzy friend who will make you smile every single day.

Most cats wear three different coats at once, like a winter sweater layered under a raincoat. They have fuzzy undercoats, middle hairs, and long guard hairs to keep the water away. But the Cornish Rex cat does things very differently. They decided to pack light and leave the heavy coats behind.

These silly cats only grow the very bottom layer of fur, which is called the down. A special little twist in their body recipe makes this down grow in tiny, tight waves. It looks exactly like a fancy velvet blanket. When you pet them, they feel softer than a baby bunny.

Because they are missing their thick raincoat layer, a Cornish Rex gets cold very easily. You will often find them snuggled up like a warm little bean. They love to hide under the covers on your bed or nap right on top of a toasty radiator. Sunlight patches on the living room rug are their absolute favorite spots.

Their wavy hair also means they do not shed very much around the house. Instead of leaving big clouds of fur on the sofa, they keep their curls mostly to themselves. This is why many people who usually sneeze around cats can be best friends with a Cornish Rex. It is like a tiny bit of everyday curly magic.

Even their whiskers are special because they are curled up and bent, like wild little corkscrews. With their huge bat ears, long skinny legs, and bumpy fur, they look like friendly space aliens. But these wavy wonders are just perfectly unique cats who love to play. They prove that sometimes being different is the absolute best way to be.
