The fuller history

In the mid-twentieth century, a remarkable genetic mutation occurred on a farm in Cornwall, England. A tortoiseshell cat named Serena gave birth to a litter containing a single, peculiar male kitten with a tightly curled, incredibly soft coat. Named Kallibunker, this unique feline became the founding sire of a brand-new breed that would eventually captivate the global feline fancy. Recognizing the distinctiveness of Kallibunker's astrakhan-like fur, local breeders consulted with geneticists to preserve the rare trait. They discovered that this striking coat was the result of a recessive gene, completely independent from the mutation that would later create the Devon Rex. Through careful outcrossing with domestic shorthairs and other established breeds, early enthusiasts successfully expanded the gene pool while maintaining the signature marcel wave. The resulting Cornish Rex is a marvel of feline architecture, characterized by a slender, whippet-like body and long, elegant legs. Beneath their plush, velvety curls, they possess deep chests, arched backs, and large, bat-like ears set high upon remarkably egg-shaped heads. This distinct morphology not only sets them apart visually but also contributes to their highly active, acrobatic, and affectionate disposition. By the late nineteen-fifties, the first Cornish Rex cats were exported from the United Kingdom to North America, sparking international interest. Dedicated breeding programs across Europe and the United States refined the breed standard, ensuring its robust health and enduring popularity. Today, this extraordinary Cornish export is celebrated worldwide by enthusiasts who prize its rich history, athletic grace, and unparalleled coat.
