Chapter One

Breed history

High in the rugged mountains of Anatolia, a remarkable natural breed of cat emerged to survive the region's harsh, snowy winters. Known as the Turkish Angora, these resilient felines developed long, silky coats without the help of human intervention. Their ancient lineage is deeply tied to the geography surrounding the city of Ankara, formerly known as Angora.

Chapter Two

Breed history

Prized for their striking elegance and fine, shimmering fur, these cats soon captured the attention of traveling merchants and diplomats. By the sixteenth century, European explorers had begun bringing the captivating felines back to their home countries. The Turkish Angora quickly became a highly coveted companion among the French and British aristocracy, celebrated as a living jewel of the East.

Chapter Three

Breed history

Despite their immense popularity, the breed faced a perilous decline as European breeders began crossing them with heavier, thicker-coated cats. This widespread interbreeding ultimately gave rise to the modern Persian cat, while the pure Turkish Angora practically vanished from the West. For many years, it seemed as though the original elegant cats of Anatolia would be lost to history entirely.

Chapter Four

Breed history

Recognizing the impending loss of a national treasure, the Turkish government intervened to preserve the ancient breed in the early twentieth century. The Ankara Zoo established a meticulous breeding program focused on protecting the pure white, odd-eyed specimens that were considered the breed's absolute ideal. Through these dedicated conservation efforts, the Turkish Angora was safely sheltered within its homeland.

Chapter Five

Breed history

In the mid-twentieth century, American military personnel stationed in Türkiye discovered the zoo's magnificent felines and successfully exported a breeding pair to the United States. This careful reintroduction allowed the authentic Turkish Angora to flourish globally once again. Today, these cats are cherished not only for their historic beauty but also for their profound intelligence and spirited, dog-like devotion to their families.
