The fuller history

The story of the Scottish Fold begins in 1961 on a rural farm in Perthshire, Scotland. A shepherd named William Ross noticed a white barn cat named Susie who possessed a unique genetic mutation that caused her ears to fold forward. Recognizing her extraordinary owl-like appearance, Ross acquired one of Susie's kittens to establish the foundation of a brand new breed. Breeders soon discovered that the folded ear was the result of a spontaneous dominant gene affecting cartilage development. To build a healthy and genetically diverse population, Susie's descendants were carefully outcrossed with local British Shorthairs. This early breeding program successfully cemented the Scottish Fold's signature rounded head and sturdy, well-padded body type. Despite early successes, the breed faced significant hurdles in its native United Kingdom. British registries grew concerned about potential auditory issues and skeletal anomalies linked to the fold gene, leading to a halt in official recognition. Seeking a more supportive environment, key breeding lines were exported to the United States where the feline found a passionate new audience. In America, dedicated geneticists and feline enthusiasts worked diligently to refine the breed and establish strict ethical breeding protocols. By ensuring that folded cats were only ever mated with straight-eared partners, they successfully managed health risks while preserving the breed's enchanting look. Today, the Scottish Fold is cherished worldwide for its remarkably gentle disposition and uniquely expressive face.
