During the mid-nineteenth century, merchant sailors from England and Scandinavia began taking notice of these robust, silver-blue felines. Valued for their exceptional mousing skills and striking appearance, the cats were frequently welcomed aboard trading vessels. As these ships returned to Western Europe, the Archangel Cats made their way into new lands and new homes.
By the late Victorian era, the breed had caught the attention of early cat fanciers and made its debut at the famous Crystal Palace cat shows. Though initially judged alongside other blue-coated breeds, purists recognized that the Russian import possessed a distinct, muscular elegance.
