Chapter One

Breed history

The Ragdoll breed traces its roots to 1960s California, emerging from the vision of a breeder named Ann Baker in Riverside. She began selecting for a specific combination of striking blue eyes, a semi-longhair coat, and an exceptionally docile temperament. By carefully crossing a white domestic longhair named Josephine with other free-roaming cats holding desirable traits, the foundation for a remarkably relaxed feline was laid.

Chapter Two

Breed history

The breed earned its memorable moniker from its distinct tendency to go limp and relaxed when picked up, much like a child's cloth toy. This endearing physical trait was paired with a large, substantial bone structure and a color-point coat pattern that took several years to fully develop in each cat. Enthusiasts quickly became captivated by these gentle giants, recognizing them as a truly unique North American creation.

Chapter Three

Breed history

To protect and promote her new lineage, Baker took the unusual step of trademarking the Ragdoll name and establishing her own strict registry. However, other dedicated breeders soon stepped away from this tightly controlled system to seek broader recognition for the cats in traditional feline associations. Their tireless efforts throughout the late twentieth century helped standardize the breed and bring it to a wider audience.

Chapter Four

Breed history

From its humble beginnings in Southern California, the Ragdoll gradually gained enthusiastic admirers across North America and eventually crossed the Atlantic. Today, it consistently ranks among the most popular pedigreed cats worldwide, celebrated in international cat registries for its affectionate disposition. The breed remains a living testament to purposeful selection, blending a striking physical presence with an unparalleled sweetness of character.

Do you know how a soft toy goes perfectly limp when you pick it up? That is exactly how these cats got their funny name. When you scoop up a Ragdoll, they relax all their muscles and melt right into your arms.

These gentle giants are almost like little puppies in disguise. They will follow you from room to room, hoping to play fetch or help with your homework. They just love being close to their favorite humans.

When Ragdoll kittens are born, they are completely snowy white. As they grow bigger and bigger, cool patches of chocolate, gray, or orange magically appear on their ears and tails. It takes them four whole years to reach their final, super-fluffy size!

If you ever want a cozy friend for a lazy afternoon, a Ragdoll is the perfect choice. They will purr like a tiny motorboat while keeping your lap warm. Life is always a little softer with one of these sweet American cats around.

Ragdoll kittens have a magical secret when they are born. They come into the world as soft, snowy white fluffs without a single spot of color. Deep inside their fur is a special hidden recipe just waiting for the right time to wake up.

This hidden recipe acts like a tiny, living thermometer. It only paints dark colors on the coolest parts of the kitten's body. Their little ears, nose, tail, and toes always get chilly first.

As the kitten grows and plays, those cool spots start to change. Slowly, a beautiful dark mask appears on their face. Their tips and toes might turn chocolate brown, soft gray, or even pale orange.

The warmer parts of the cat, like their snuggly tummy and chest, stay light and creamy. It is like they are wearing a cozy winter sweater that only shows color where the frosty air touches them.

Every single Ragdoll is a fluffy work of art painted by the temperature around them. When you hug one of these big, blue-eyed cats, you are cuddling a wonderful snowy science experiment!
