The fuller history

Long before it became a fixture of international cat shows, the ancestors of the Persian breed roamed the rugged landscapes of ancient Persia, known today as Iran. These early longhaired cats adapted to the mountainous climates of Central Asia by developing a dense, luxurious coat. Their striking appearance soon caught the attention of early merchants and travelers traversing the vibrant trade routes. In the seventeenth century, European diplomats and traders began bringing these magnificent felines back to their home countries. An Italian nobleman named Pietro della Valle is widely credited with introducing the first documented longhaired cats from the Iranian plateau to Europe. These exotic pets quickly became highly prized among the aristocracy, who were enchanted by their calm demeanor and flowing fur. During the nineteenth century, the breed underwent significant refinement in Great Britain by dedicated feline fanciers. Enthusiasts selectively bred the imported cats to enhance their round faces, stout bodies, and characteristic snub noses. It was during this Victorian era that the Persian took center stage at the world's first organized cat shows, cementing its status as a premier luxury breed. Today, the Persian stands as one of the most recognized and beloved cat breeds across the globe. While modern breeding has gradually altered their original appearance into the extreme, flat-faced profile seen in contemporary show rings, their essential character remains unchanged. The breed retains the quiet, dignified sweetness that has captivated human companions since its ancient beginnings in the Near East.
