Chapter One

Breed history

The Chartreux is a deeply historical and captivating breed, recognized as a cherished feline emblem of France. With its robust, muscular build and dense, water-repellent blue coat, this cat was perfectly adapted to the varied climates of the French countryside. Its striking copper or gold eyes offer a vivid contrast to its slate-gray fur, making it instantly recognizable among traditional European breeds.

Chapter Two

Breed history

Historical records suggest these cats were brought to Europe from the Middle East by returning crusaders or merchants. A popular but unproven legend claims they lived alongside Carthusian monks in the Grande Chartreuse monastery, quietly hunting mice while the monks brewed their famous liqueur. While the monastic connection remains a romantic myth, the breed was certainly well-established in French texts by the eighteenth century.

Chapter Three

Breed history

Natural mousers, the early Chartreux were highly valued by farmers, artisans, and merchants to protect grain stores and merchandise. They were rugged working animals rather than pampered parlor pets, often roaming rural estates and bustling city streets alike. Their quiet demeanor and efficient hunting skills eventually endeared them to the French elite, gradually transitioning them from barns to comfortable hearths.

Chapter Four

Breed history

The tumultuous periods of the twentieth-century World Wars devastated the Chartreux population, pushing the historic breed to the brink of extinction. Dedicated European fanciers initiated careful breeding programs using remaining feral colonies found on the French island of Belle-Ile-en-Mer. They meticulously worked to stabilize the genetic lines while preserving the distinct, heavy-boned Chartreux type that had roamed France for centuries.

Chapter Five

Breed history

By the late twentieth century, the breed had successfully rebounded and began making its way across the Atlantic to North America. Today, the Chartreux remains a relatively rare but deeply treasured companion worldwide, celebrated for its loyal, dog-like personality and observant nature. It stands as a living piece of French natural history, a testament to the resilience and enduring appeal of Europe's heritage felines.

Once upon a time in the beautiful country of France, there lived a very special cat called the Chartreux. This kitty looked like a fluffy gray raincloud with bright orange eyes. Monks who lived in quiet stone castles loved these calm cats very much.

If you ever meet a Chartreux, you might think it is smiling at you. Their sweet little faces always look happy and gentle. They also have thick, soft fur that feels just like a cozy wool blanket on a chilly day.

Unlike noisy cats that meow loudly, the Chartreux is very quiet. They prefer to make tiny chirping sounds or just purr softly like a little motor. But do not let their quiet ways fool you, because they are excellent at catching sneaky mice!

Even though they look round and sleepy, these gray cats love to play games. Many of them even like to play fetch with tiny toys, just like a puppy does. They will run, jump, and bring their favorite toy right back to your hands.

At the end of a long day of playing and exploring, a Chartreux wants nothing more than to be by your side. They will curl up next to you on the sofa, keeping you warm. Having a Chartreux is like having a gentle, gray shadow who is always your best friend.

Saha followed Colette everywhere she went. When Colette sat down to write her stories, the quiet cat curled up right beside her ink pot. Saha did not meow very much, but she purred a gentle, rumbling song. This happy sound helped the writer think of new ideas.

Colette thought Saha was the most wonderful friend in the world. She decided to write a whole book just about her beautiful blue cat. In her book, she called the Chartreux breed the true cats of France. She described Saha as a little furry bear with a round, smiling face.
