Chapter Three

Breed history

To preserve these unique traits, Dr. Thompson collaborated with geneticists and fellow enthusiasts to establish a rigorous and careful breeding program. Long ago in a beautiful land called Myanmar in Asia, there lived a very special cat. This land was full of sparkling temples and green jungles. Here, the first Burmese cats prowled through the warm sunlight with coats like shiny brown silk.

A Burmese cat is sturdy and strong, like a little brick wrapped in soft velvet. They have big, round eyes that gleam like bright golden coins. If you pick one up, you might be surprised by how heavy they are for their size.

These cats do not like to be left alone because they are incredibly friendly. They love their human families so much that they will follow you from room to room. Sometimes they even talk to you with a soft, sweet voice, telling you all about their day.

Burmese cats are just like playful little puppies. They love to fetch toys and learn fun tricks to make you smile. Even when they grow up, they stay full of bouncy energy and joyful mischief.

At the end of a busy day, a Burmese cat is the perfect snuggle buddy. They will curl up right on your lap like a warm, purring motor. Once you make friends with a Burmese cat, you have a lovely best friend forever.

Did you know the Burmese cat has a magical, color-changing coat? When these amazing kittens are first born, they look like fluffy little snowballs. Their fur is completely pale and light. It is hard to believe they will grow up to be dark, chocolate-brown beauties!

The secret to their magic trick is hidden inside their fur, and it reacts to the cold. As the pale kittens grow, the cooler parts of their bodies start to change color. Their little ears, tails, and noses get chilly first. Slowly, those chilly spots turn into a rich, dark brown.

Soon, the dark color spreads like spilled hot cocoa over their whole body. Unlike some cats that only keep dark spots on their paws, the Burmese cat gets deeply toasted all over. Their back becomes a warm, shiny sable brown. Their tummy stays just a tiny bit lighter, like a roasted marshmallow.

This special coat is not just beautiful to look at, but it feels like pure silk. When a Burmese cat stretches out in a sunbeam, its dark fur sparkles with a secret golden glow. Peeking out from all that rich brown fur are big, round eyes that shine as bright as yellow gold.

Every lovely Burmese cat you see is basically a walking, purring thermometer! Their beautiful dark coats are a cozy blanket made by nature itself. Next time you pet a Burmese, you will know the wonderful science of how they got their perfect colors.
